Title: Guess the Band/Artist
Post by: Poem58 on August 31, 2010, 08:31:04 am
Guess the band/Artist who's name is represented by the clues. Then leave your own clue for others. No need to wait to see if your right, just be kind enough to come back soon to chime in with the correct answer.

You could say "The John the Baptist and Elizabeth Necklace" or just a description like "the crocodile piano man" (can you guess these 2?)

I'll kick it off.

"I get it now!"

Yep, your turn (Actually you could have already put one, no need to wait for someone to say it's right to play!

Sorry, it was a cardinal sin on Chicago Chat to assume you were correct...heh.

Howevah, to be honest--I don't have one.  You can go for me, Mikey.  Those were good, BTW.

Keep in mind one sided games rarely last long but if you want more, I shall and hope someone comes along to join you.

1. Quadruple Brunettes

2. These guys claim to have very large powerful hooked beaks for tearing flesh from their prey, strong muscular legs, and powerful talons.
(not to be confused with the band who would be known as "The Aves")

3. Sing me a song I'm the Piano Man

4. 520–570 nanometres from morning to night

5. Sir Redundant

6. Infirm Baked Good

7. Abe feeds pigeons here

That should be enough for now. Have fun!

1. Quadruple Brunettes: 4 Non-Blondes
2. These guys claim to have very large powerful hooked beaks for tearing flesh from their prey, strong muscular legs, and powerful talons. - Them Crooked Vultures or The Eagles... could be either.
3. Sing me a song I'm the Piano Man: Billy Joel
4. 520–570 nanometres from morning to night: I have no bloody clue
5. Sir Redundant: Mr. Mister?
6. Infirm Baked Good: Limp Bizkit
7. Abe feeds pigeons here: Linkin Park

Also Darrin got them all but #4, which isn't that hard actually. HINT Google is your friend.

Never heard of "Them Crooked Vultures" and since I had no clue mentioning shape or anything, The Eagles was correct.

For future reference had I been going for Darrin's other suggestion, to be fair I would have had to say, These guys claim to be ( non straight or thieves etc.) and have very large powerful hooked beaks for tearing flesh from their prey, strong muscular legs, and powerful talons.

All parts of the name should be used if one is going to be able to specify. I see you also didn't get the not to be confused with part, Darrin.

uh...why?

I don't have questions.  I only have answers...!  BTW...I don't google.  If I don't know...I DON'T KNOW...so I guess y'all can play with yourselves, too.  LOL.  (did that not come out right? heh.)

One more thing--# 4 is  THE THREE DEGREES...When Will I See You, right?

have fun.

I understand, but feel free to answer even if you just want to pass the next question part along!

Nope, #4 is not that (another band I've never heard of !)

I'll give a clue, "from morning to night" is the second word of the band name, we all know what is from morning to night. Another way of saying it in a more technical manor could be 24 hours as well.

The first part as my wife mentioned could also be "Environmentally conscious"

Green Day?

YES! (if one googled 520-570 nanometres the very first search result was green!) I check these things out to be sure my clues if one is stumped by too technical a term it will provide the answer. Same with the eagles one, yet you still didn't answer the band known as "The Aves" which would have googled to be "birds" which would then be "The Byrds"

OK...it's your turn Darrin!

I'll see what I can come up with:

Old Red Fire Engine
Female Monarch
Misanthrope Corporation
Artificially Luminescent Symphony
The Children
Small Stream Group
Plasma, Perspiration, & Optical Discharge
Spire of Potency
TOO MUCH

Misanthrope Corporation-  Bad Company (Although the definition of Misanthrope suggests hatred for man-kind not just "bad" so I'm probably wrong.)
The Children-  The Offspring (Good one I almost didn't get it, then again, maybe I didn't?!)
Small Stream Group-  Little River Band
Spire of Potency-  Tower of Power

Even if these are right Packer got most, so it would be her turn!

You got all of the rest of them right!  I know there were probably better words I could have used for "Bad" but I didn't want to make it TOO obvious.

all winners. And the Russian Roulette- maybe I was told wrong (not too into guns), but someone told me that a .38 Special is what they use.

So I actually got .38 Special? I thought it was a brain twister. To me Noah's Chapter was too, for whatever reason my wife and I circled around everything we could think of involving Arks, boats, Animals, Books, Pages etc.

It was quite the "DOH!" moment when we saw Kath's answer. See this game is fun!

I guess it's my turn....again. Unless someone takes it by tomorrow, then I'll go if no one else has (seeing how Kath got Genesis I am dying to see what she would come up with but she won't play :( )

I confess...I sorta cheated...I called my Uncle who's a Pastor.  But I also had a hunch as well...I said to him, "What part of the Bible is NOAH mentioned in?  Is it Genesis??"

Yeah, this is a fun game. And I'd also love to see what you'd throw at us, Kath.

Ok, then. Internets was out yesterday so I'm back and will see what I can come up with.

Rock Church Aviator

Brutal Young Male Animals

Homo-Sapian Collection of Individuals

Mollusk Made Calcium Carbonate Spread for Toast

This man once sang "Tam bo li de say de moi ya
                                    Hey Jambo Jumbo"

A pile of ashes is all that remains

One man and a local at 11 TV program

A kiss from this band might burn your face

He might be your handyman but cannot alter your suit

Garden plant man who is backed by Mexican metal

The Savior everyone tries to keep up with

Grand scale loss of life

Lethal Substance

Football Aircraft Band

Guys not resting

When this three piece became a two, the condition of stability and peace was finally achieved.

That's all for now. Should be easy...have fun!

Okay...I got a few...but again, to DO this would be a MUCH longer task for me than to figure 'em out...

so...

ROCK CHURCH AVIATOR= Stone Temple Pilots
MOLLUSK MADE CALCIUM CARBONATE SPREAD FOR TOAST= Pearl Jam
ONE MAN &  A LOCAL PROGRAM blah blah blah= Huey Lewis & The News
GARDEN PLANT MAN WHO IS BACKED BY MEXICAN  METAL= Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass
THE SAVIOR EVERYONE TRIES TO KEEP UP WITH= Jesus Jones
LETHAL SUBSTANCE= Poison
GUYS NOT RESTING= Men At Work

I'll see what I can do with the rest, and will try towork on some CLUES over the next couple days...

Brutal Young Male Animals

Homo-Sapian Collection of Individuals- Village People

A pile of ashes is all that remains

A kiss from this band might burn your face- Red Hot Chili Peppers

He might be your handyman but cannot alter your suit- James Taylor

Grand scale loss of life- Megadeath

Football Aircraft Band- Led Zepplin

When this three piece became a two, the condition of stability and peace was finally achieved.  Nirvana?

Title: Re: Guess the Band/Artist
Post by: Poem58 on September 11, 2010, 08:32:36 pm
James Tayler Megadeth and Nirvana are correct.

While Village People could be an acceptable answer it is not what I was going for think. Just so you get how my clues work, if I was going for that I would have been more fair and said it in the same order (when possible) or Collection of Individual Homo-Sapins in this case.

So think Homo-Sapian  (space) Collection of Individuals (bonus: think a collection of bowlers)

Kissing a red hot chili pepper might burn your lips but hopefully not your face!! LOL Bonus: Clue in sentence.

Led Zepplin Football? (Oh, I get it, the shape...that never occurred to me!) So no, but I guess that one kinda counts. But the real answer will show you why I went with that poor clue. Bonus: A family from Minnesota, who some of their ancestors came from the island of Tonga.

Brutal Animal Young Male Humans  might have been a better way to put this, so please forgive and guess again!

Lots of words.

Cool. Can't wait to see what you come up with. Now figure out the rest!

Also funny with the Huey Clue you decided to save time by typing "Blah Blah Blah" to replace "at 11 TV" a grand savings of 6 extra letters...HA!  ::)

Title: Re: Guess the Band/Artist

and I have an additional answer for

LETHAL SUBSTANCE=Anthrax  ;)

DUDE...that "Lot's of words" IS NOT IN MY ORIGINAL POST...go back up there and look.  NOT ME.  I might have a tube in my brain, but I would NEVER EVER PUT A POSSESSIVE IN THE WORD "LOTS" And--"blah blah blah" wasn't to use more or use less characters...I couldn't find it on the list, and couldn't remember the rest.

Title: Re: Guess the Band/Artist
Post by: Poem58 on September 13, 2010, 07:32:31 am
Lots of words was me shortening the post by not repeating you which also had a quote from me and would have taken most of a page to repeat us both when we clearly didn't need to read it again, but letting you know it was directed at you. Goofy thing I picked up somewhere else. And yes, I shouldn't have typed the ( ' ) there either. A being Tired posting mistake. I'll fix it.

I know the blah blah was just to get the post without looking it up, but usually it's to save time, I was just poking fun at it being twice as long.

As for Anthrax, yeah, it's a lethal substance , but if we were to go to those extremes in this game, even Led Zepplin is a lethal substance as eating one would kill you by Lead poisoning, eating something larger than you would blow you up, and if it landed on you it would kill you too.

For Anthrax, I would have said something like Germ Warfare Band. I'm trying to be clever, not impossible to figure out. But when a guess that also fits is used as in Led Zepplin for Football Aircraft Band, I credit it as being one I didn't think of. So no harm, but notice I will give a more helpful clue then to help get to the one I was looking for.

Ok, I'll give the answers no one had gotten yet.

Homo-Sapian  Collection of Individuals - Human League

A pile of ashes is all that remains - After the Fire

A kiss from this band might burn your face - The Flaming Lips

Brutal Animal Young Male Humans - Beastie Boys

Football Aircraft Band - The Jets (Although Led Zepplin was accidentally correct as well)

Led Zepplin was my thinking of the Goodyear Blimp hanging out at football games.

They're an awesome band!  I didn't get into them until long after they were popular though (about 9-10 years ago).  I especially enjoy their lyrics... they don't do that lover's lament type stuff (at least not for the most part) and their arrangements are rather intriguing.

HELLYEAH!!  I was TOTALLY into them in Junior High/High School...and they have 4 of the VERY BEST (MY OPINION...whatever...) ALBUMS IN THE 70'S;  CRIME OF THE CENTURY-'74/CRISIS? WHAT CRISIS?-'75/EVEN IN THE QUIETEST MOMENTS-'77/BREAKFAST IN AMERICA-'79. [/b]

There's a bunch of bands like this;  Styx, Pink Floyd, Alice Cooper, Santana, etc.,  that I got turned onto by friends who had older brothers, mostly...the same ones who let us listen to TOMMY with 'em. ;)  I also had three cousins used to hand me down A LOT OF COOL ****, too...along with Queen/CHI/Beach Boys/Elton John/Hall & Oates/Carpenters/ELO/Billy Joel/Jethro Tull/Kansas/Foreigner/Boston were my musical world at that time...And it all broke loose after High School.  heh.  As your circles change, so does your musical tastes...or, you see there's more out there than what was cool in School, or what your circle thought was cool; ahh, peer pressure.

...and to coin a phrase--"What a long strange trip it's been..."   ;D

I'm not as keen on Even In the Quietest Moments (despite that it was recorded at the Caribou Ranch) as I was on the other 3 you mentioned.  Crisis?  What Crisis?!, despite it's lack of hits, remains my favorite by them.  I find it to be a bit more "consistent" than their other albums.  But there truly is some great stuff on both Crime of the Century and Breakfast in America as well.... Even Famous Last Words from 1983 has its moments (the song Crazy in particular).

OK, if no one else wants to, I guess I'll go again.

1. This artist has gone by 4 names and having been denied entry into the USA really knows what a wild world this really is.

2. 1 pound ground beef, 1/2 pound ground pork, 1/2 pound ground veal plus seasonings baked at 350 degrees for 1 1/2 hours.

3. "Analog in the sky" would be this bands competition.

4. Formerly alive political brothers.

5. Monroe Charles

6. He melts in your mouth not in your hands.

7.  If named scientifically, this bands name would mean, "Sheathed Wings" which is funny as one member must have known that when he went solo.

8. Young men who frequent alleys

9. One's love for material produced by or used in a reaction involving changes in atoms or molecules

10. This artist's name sounds like he travels on moving material, while removing a space in the spelling makes it look clearly not a movable state.

11. which is your favorite...Kandy,Kanned or on the Kob?

12. Mayberry was stunned to see the barber in such a light shade of red.

13. To Intentionally Abandon a Quintuplet

14. Uncomplicated set of intended actions

15. A canine that will pry into others affairs

Some easy some just weird, have fun!

7.  If named scientifically " (The)Coleoptera", this bands name would mean, "(The) Sheathed Wings" which is funny as one member must have known that when he went solo.

10. This artist's name sounds like he travels on moving material, while removing a space in the spelling makes it look clearly not a movable state.

13. To Intentionally Abandon a Quintuplet

14. Uncomplicated set of intended actions

One of them just came to me...

13. To Intentionally Abandon a Quintuplet - Maroon 5

Monroe Charles=MARILYN MANSON
To intentionally Abandon a Quintuplet=MAROON 5 (??)

Title: Re: Guess the Band/Artist

yep and yep, both of you got Maroon 5 during simultaneous posts, how interesting!
 The rest of the answers...

7. The scientific name Coleoptera meaning "Sheathed Wings" are Beetles. When "The Beatles" broke up Paul's new band was "Wings" coincidence? probably.

10. Flo Rida... sounds like he's ridin' the flow... (remove the space and you have an unmovable state "Florida" )

14. uncomplicated set of intended actions... Simple Plan

That was fun...next!

Darrin's was 2 minutes before mine.  heh.

And...ANY Marilyn Manson fan knows that all the guys in the band all have first names of models/actresses and last names of Serial Killers...that one was EASY PEASY.   ;D

I've found that any posts within 2-5 minutes can actually be simultaneous, if he had already posted it you likely wouldn't have said the same thing without acknowledging the original post, so likely he posted right after you started creating yours in which case you were both crafting a post simultaneously.  One one of the boards I frequent for the small computer I am waiting on, there are so many members and this happens so often that the term "Ninja'd" is edited in after their post was made and they saw one or more people were faster to saying it than they were.

So if you were on that board you would have edited and posted "Ninja'd by Darrin" why they do that when we can clearly see they posted so close together I don't know, it's just one of those quirky community things. Each group tends to have their own way of doing things.

Anyway, I didn't know that about Marilyn Manson, I just saw something that had the band name and Monroe Charles just jumped into my head as a good clue. You should have guessed it though, but I understand why you left it for the others. I suppose if I saw a list like this somewhere else and "Windy City the Band" was the clue, I probably wouldn't ruin it for those it wouldn't occur too right away. Nah, screw that, I'd show em just much more I know than they do..lol

OK, I waited and nothing. (hoping someone else would make some) So I'll try again.

1. Sunshine State Bus and Train Masters

2. Underage males getting a tan and surfing.

3. Dark day of prayer.

4. Creek musicians.

5. Forger of bow ammunition. (this ones a stretch, but someone might figure what I'm getting at.)

6. Tune-able Noggin

7. Freakishly long hand growths of Keratin

8. Artistic Performance viewed while sleeping.

9. Those who live in small rural settlements.

From bands to artists: (remember name sounds not spelling help sometimes)

10. Name word play, this artists name could be interpreted as "****, messenger of God."

11. Name word play, this artists name could be interpreted as " On your knees, precious gemstone"

12. Name word play, this artists name could be interpreted as " Toilet, the Marxist Revolutionary"

13. Named for a cherry(?..lol), his granddaughter served on the Enterprise.

Wow, you sailed right through those... Now for the one you missed...clue "messenger of God" is what this archangels name means, also this musicians last name. Which is kinda funny considering the name of the band he once was in.

Peter Gabriel... I like Dick Prophet better... Maybe that will be my stage name or nom de plume if I ever get published...  I was leaning towards Tatsuro Watanabe as my stage name (despite not being or even resembling anyone remotely Japanese) but I really like Dick Prophet.

--PAINFULLY SHY GROUP - THE WALLFLOWERS

--PLEASE KNOCK ME OUT - HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT

--ROYAL GOVERNMENT - QUEENSRYCHE ?

--DETONATING RODENTS (for Darrin) For Darrin to get this, he needs a vital clue This would be (DETONATING SMALL RURAL CITY RODENTS)
I forget what clue we used for this one earlier, so Darrin just know that having already used a band name doesn't mean it won't come up again.

--SELF-IMPOSED OR COURT-ORDERED CENTER - I assume that crack head chicks song "REHAB" is what you are looking for.

--CARD GAME PLAYING STRATEGY There are so many songs with card game references, the first coming to mind were lyrics not a song title or artist.
What came to mind was the chorus of Kenny Rogers "The Gambler" (You got to know when to hold em, know when to fold em...etc...)
So are you looking for Artist or Song?
(Maybe since band names are getting harder I should change the thread title and we should change this to song titles now)

--OUTDOOR PUBLIC GATHERING PLACE ON THE 6TH DAY (for Mikey) - Frighteningly Simple, it's "Saturday In The Park"

--EXTRA LARGE COLD BLOODED WATER VERTEBRATES - Wow, quite a few Whale named bands as well as having amphibians and reptiles included make me quit with this one.

--PART OF US THAT GOES ON ADORNED BY THE 19TH CHARACTER - 19th Character being "s"? Not going to get this one either, but I tried. Actually I can't get any after this either.

--DIVINE BEINGS -

--CARNIVOROUS OCEAN DWELLER IN ITS NATIVE STATE -

--BABYDOLL CLAD SUBSERVIENTS MOVING RHYTHMICALLY -

Yeah, I would not have gotten those....Parliament , I didn't even know they had that name without the Funkadelic part in the name , so I learned something as well.

Next time it might help to separate band ones from song ones for ones like me who have less older music knowledge as I was never quite sure if I was trying to decipher a band name or song title, and believe me that makes a huge difference when racking your brain!

I do think I should get a half point for Queensryche and Hit Me with your best shot, as they fit even if they were not what you were looking for :P

If Darrin doesn't make a list I will later on. Maybe I'll focus on attempting clues for which more than one answer applies, that would be REALLY crazy!

Nope, Never heard of em! Which is why my mind went to the previous Boomtown thought. What's hard for me and easier for you guys is that you guys know WAY more artists than I, especially you Kath. You seem to have a deep and diverse band knowledge. Probably why you were able to give song titles a go as well. I will try that, if I can. It might be many much more funner than just bands. Whaddya think, Album titles as well? I promise to put them into categories so you know what I am trying to go for!

What's amazing to me is to notice how mainstream my lists were, yours more diverse, and Kath's WAY more sophisticated. I was in my early teens before I cared about music and couldn't afford to buy much which is why it took me probably 10 years to collect all the Chicago albums and a lot of those were gifts or copies. Actually I was still discovering music my friends listened to in the 80's as the 90's were rolling along. Funny enough, my neighbor growing up, she loved "The Outfield" so much I could say it was her "Chicago". It wasn't until a few years ago that I realized I did actually know a song by them when I heard "Your Love".

The Outfield had killer vocal harmonies and are a joy to listen to.  I recommend checking out Big Innings: The Best of the Outfield if you enjoy Your Love a lot of their other songs are just as good.  I find them amusing too, a British band named after a reference to American baseball (the original band name actually was "Baseball")... Kind of like the Bay City Rollers back in the 70s... A Scottish Band who randomly pointed at a map of the USA to come up with their name.  The finger randomly landed on Bay City, MI.
