The LIVE AID thing was SO STUPID...remember--they kept having UPDATES all day...He's in the air!  He's at the airport!  He's gettin' on the plane!  It's landing!! Roll Eyes why didn't he perform at Wembley, and take the MONEY HE SPENT ON THE HELICOPTERS AND THE CONCORDE and just DONATE IT?  It would've made a WAYYYYY better impression!!

Love is a wife beater who married his first cousin Dennis Wilson's daughter just to **** him off.  He's been married 5 times.  Even though he's an avowed non-druggie he still went bankrupt due to his lifestyle.  He sues every member of The Beach Boys every chance he gets for any

I don't know about him being a wife beater, I never heard that, but you have the other part backwards. It was Dennis who married Mike's daughter. They were still married at the time of Dennis' death, so she had widow's rights & decided the funeral arrangements, which at the time were said to have pissed off the rest of the family.

As for the Mike & Walt comments, I think it's funny because they're both Pisces - Walt's b-day is the day before mine & Mike's is the same day (different years!!!). Maybe y'all would find me smarmy in person too?

You're right Pegs.  It was the other way around.  Don't know what I was thinking!  Anyway I've heard enough bad stories about Mike Love to know that Walt is an amateur compared to him.  Yes, Dennis was buried at sea.

I had that solo album Brian Wilson came out with around 1995.  I forget the name of it, sold it long ago.  It sounded a lot like "Pet Sounds" and had the minor hit "Your Imagination."  That was my brief infatuation with the "Pet Sounds" Beach Boys era.  Didn't last long.  Apparently the surviving BBs are getting back together to tour next year, probably because no one wants to see Mike Love touring as "the voice of the Beach Boys."  What a jerk.  Anyway, Brian is supposed to be part of it.
There's something about Mike Love that just oozes sleaze.  I wouldn't be surprised if somewhere in an alternate dimension instead of finding them as musicians you'd be driving down some SoCal street and see a "Parazaider/Love Used Cars" as Walt Parazaider exudes a similar (although a little bit less smarmy) air.

I can see where you would want to compare the two but I'd buy a used car from Walt way before I'd buy one from Mike Love.  Love is a wife beater who married his first cousin Dennis Wilson's daughter just to **** him off.  He's been married 5 times.  Even though he's an avowed non-druggie he still went bankrupt due to his lifestyle.  He sues every member of The Beach Boys every chance he gets for any reason he can think of and single-handedly turned them into the oldies act they became instead of the hip band they were in the years immediately after Pet Sounds

Even though he's an annoying blowhard I think Walt has been a pretty stable guy, still married to the same girl for decades, is a good father and apparently still has his fortune but I still like your humorous comparison.

...Velvet Lizard.  LOL!!

"Hey, Sallyanne, Wanna pet my Velvet Lizard?  It's reeeallly preeeetty." Grin  I'm sorry...that's great!  I can see the shirts...!!

I think the name may have also come from these lyrics form the Beatles song "Happiness is a Warm Gun:"  "She's well acquainted with the touch of the velvet hand
Like a lizard on a window pane."

I have the 60 minute WMMR concert referred to in this Wikipedia article on cassette.  The article contains Joel's explanation of the song.  I've been meaning to burn it to a CD for posterity.  It was a great show.

Here's one of my favorite rocking version of a non-rock song.

The Brian Setzer Orchestra really captures the era pretty well even if he adds his rockabilly guitar to the whole thing.
24  Classic Rock / The 60s / Re: The Beatles: The Anthology/Live at the BBC on: August 03, 2010, 08:19:42 am
Anthology 3 came yesterday.  Lennon was keen to have "What's The New Mary Jane?" on the White Album.  It's a bit of a mess, but certainly miles better than "Revolution 9," the only "skip" track I have amongst their regular releases.  Finished Disc 1 while working out: pretty decent to have if you are a Beatlemaniac!

You're right, "What's The New Mary Jane?" might be the stupidest song they ever did after "Revolution 9."  It was all part of John's desire during this period to be as outrageous as possible.  Yoko's influence, of course.

Lot's of stuff by Nat King Cole and Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass

Bobby Darin - Mack the Knife
Bobby Darin - Beyond the Sea
Perry Como -  Dream a Little Dream of Me
Jack Jones/The Grateful Dead (no, I'm not kidding) - The Race is On

Jones did the original in 1965 and it created quite a fervor because some people were disappointed that a popular lounge crooner of the period would do a rock song.

What are some of your favorite big band/swing classics & standards?  Some of mine include

Moonlight Serenade - A classic in every sense of the word.  As beautiful and moving today as the day it was first performed.
Pennsylvania 6-5000 - A great and fun song.
String of Pearls - I've actually had this one stuck in my head all morning
In the Mood - Perhaps second only to Moonlight Serenade as the definitive song of the swing era.
Sing Sing Sing - A close third to In the Mood and Moonlight Serenade as far as how well it has stood the test of time/how well it's remembered.
Caravan - Great song, great rhythm

I like all of those listed above, especially "In The Mood" and my favorite, "Sing, Sing, Sing."

I'd add Artie Shaw's "Begin The Beguine" and Harry James' "I've Heard That Song Before"  which was prominent in Woody Allen's Hannah and Her Sisters.

More Ellington: "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," "Take the A Train," and "I'm Beginning to See the Light."

Benny Goodman's "Stompin' at the Savoy" is another.

I've got quite the big band collection on vinyl.

OK, I guess the obvious question is, is The Beatles "Love" release worthwhile?  We have the mash-up of "Tomorrow Never Knows"/"Within You Without You" on "Beatles Rock Band" and I find it quite interesting.  Thanks!

I have it and it's interesting to see how some of the songs have the same beat and key so they blend well together. Its it's good for educational purposes, I played it once but that's all.  If you really want to enjoy The Beatles stick with their real albums.

For me it is The Who.  I think it was caused by how much they were overplayed on classic rock radio. That pretty much did it for me.  I also got tired of Keith Moon's drumming.  He may be the loudest drummer in the world but he has no technique.
