Is anyone else on here a fan of classic Genesis?  By classic Genesis I mean when they were at their creative peak starting with the Nursery Cryme album (1972) on up through Wind & Wuthering (1978).  I know some Genesis fans consider their creative peak to have ended with Peter Gabriel's final album with the band (the double LP, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway) but that fails to take into account the exceptional A Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering studio albums, not to mention their 2nd live album Seconds Out.

The shift from prog-rock to pop didn't really start until after Steve Hackett left (...  And Then There Were Three).

Four of their best songs were actually recorded in this era-- Afterglow, Los Endos, Ripples, and arguably the best love song they ever recorded; Your Own Special Way.

That's not to discredit the Peter Gabriel era-- there's some brilliant material on Nursery Cryme, Foxtrot, and Selling England By the Pound... that being said I've never been much a fan of the double LP Lamb Lies Down on Broadway I thought it was a bit too self-indulgent.  It has its moments but I felt Genesis was teetering close to that line of becoming overly self-important and that album catapulted them over that line.  A Trick of the Tail was a return to form-- of the brilliance of imho their best album, Selling England By the Pound.

But that's just me-- I leave it to others to dissect, argue, repudiate, or if you like-- agree.

I'm not a fan of Art or Progressive Rock.  Somehow Jethro Tull gets lumped into that bag, which I don't get.  To me they are more of a jazz/rock/folk fusion thing.  But I digress.  I'm not a huge Genesis fan, but I think they were a lot better with Gabriel.  He was supposed to tour with the classic lineup this year, but that fell through.  He just didn't want to do it, preferring to work on his covers album and promote that instead.

I lost all interest in Phil Collins when he did that stunt at Live Aid to promote "Against All Odds" by performing it in the US and England.  That was really stupid, self-serving and a waste of $.  One of the most overrated vocalists/drummers in rock music history.  Genesis became as generic and bland as his solo music when he jumped to front the band.

Genesis didn't start becoming generic or bland until after Steve Hackett left.  It was his influence as much as Gabriel's that kept them musically adventurous.  Once he was gone all bets were off.  They effectively "jumped the shark."  Unfortunately Hackett was only able to soldier on for about 3 years or so before he followed Gabriel out the exit door.  His solo debut from 1975, Voyage of the Acolyte has a strong enough Genesis presence that many Genesis fans consider it to be as much a "Genesis" album as A Trick of the Tail or Wind & Wuthering

Much like with Peter Gabriel, since leaving Genesis, Hackett has tried his hat at a variety of different styles-- world music, jazz fusion, and he's even put out some classical guitar albums.

After Hackett and Gabriel left, I stopped listening...I TOTALLY DISLIKE Phil Collins.  (and I still maintain HE was the prototype for the CABBAGE PATCH KIDS DOLLS.  heh.)

The LIVE AID thing was SO STUPID...remember--they kept having UPDATES all day...He's in the air!  He's at the airport!  He's gettin' on the plane!  It's landing!! Roll Eyes why didn't he perform at Wembley, and take the MONEY HE SPENT ON THE HELICOPTERS AND THE CONCORDE and just DONATE IT?  It would've made a WAYYYYY better impression!!

Because despite his "just folks" public persona, he's a self-serving egomaniac who divorced at least one wife BY FAX!  That entire Live aid dual cities thing was done to promote that bland, boring "Against All Odds" single.  It worked, as it went to #1.  I remember more than once almost falling asleep at the wheel with that stupid song on the radio.  The girl I was dating at the time was in love with Collins/Genesis and wouldn't hear of changing the station, LOL.  NO. that is NOT the girl I married. THANK GOD!
